WHO WE ARE

The Central Virginia Academy for Nonprofit Excellence (CVANE) improves the quality, integrity, and effectiveness of Central Virginia’s charitable organizations through the education of board members, staff, and volunteers.

By strengthening, educating and engaging non-profits, CVANE seeks to help improve the quality of life in Central Virginia through improved program operations, increased resources for families and individuals, and greater impact of charitable donations.

CVANE provides unique training by seasoned professionals who are experts in their respective fields, and offers training at an affordable cost to ensure accessibility to a wide range of nonprofit organizations in Lynchburg and its surrounding counties.

Before You Start a Nonprofit:
Sometimes the best nonprofit to start is one that already exists.

You have an idea. You see a need in the community. Now what?

Starting a nonprofit is one way to create change—but it isn't the only way, and it may not always be the best first step. Before you file paperwork, recruit a board, or apply for tax-exempt status, join local experts for an honest conversation about what it really takes to build a sustainable organization.

Representatives from the local SBDC will introduce Co.Starters for Causes, a program designed to help community-minded entrepreneurs explore and strengthen their ideas. We'll also hear from SHARE Greater Lynchburg, which helps organizations and community partners work together to maximize impact.

Together, we'll explore questions like:

Does your community need a new nonprofit—or a new partnership?
What resources, funding, and leadership are required for long-term success?
What alternatives exist to creating a new organization?
How can you test your idea before making a long-term commitment?

Whether you're passionate about solving a problem or simply exploring an idea, you'll leave with practical guidance, local resources, and greater confidence about your next step.
